About Me
I’m Derek Austin, a Machine Learning and AI Research Scientist with a focus on computer vision. I’ve spent my career building at the intersection of cutting-edge research and real-world product development, working across early-stage startups in both the defense technology and LLM observability and evaluation spaces.
In defense tech, I’ve applied ML and computer vision to solve complex, high-stakes problems at the edge where reliability and performance are non-negotiable. On the observability side, I’ve worked on evaluation methods, tooling, and infrastructure to help teams understand, monitor, and evaluate large language models in production.
I’m passionate about bridging the gap between research and deployment. I love taking ideas from papers and turning them into systems that work at scale.
